Partnering Masterclass with Julia Cost
Cost: $15 (cash, check, credit card accepted)
Level: advanced dancers, teens to adult
*BRING SOCKS + LAYERS OF CLOTHES THAT ALLOWS YOU TO SLIDE AROUND IN AND BE COZY*
Within the safety of the laboratory of the dance studio, students will explore the territory of relationship to another human. Consciousness within the individual dancing body will be expanded to consciousness of and with another body. Students will learn about their own weight and how to share weight and take weight. We will investigate habits around control and vulnerability and we will safely experience less familiar points on this spectrum. This class will open avenues for shifting focus from performative/outward to hyper-present/attentive to another being.
BIO: Julia Cost was born and raised on Maui, where she trained at AAPA, Seabury Hall, and MAPA. She went on to study at LINES Ballet and San Francisco Conservatory of Dance from 2004-2009 while earning a double BA in Dance and in Studio Art at Scripps College. She then earned her MFA in Dance at University of California, Irvine and afterwards moved to the San Francisco Bay Area and started a small dance company called Nine Shards, performing new choreographic work at The Garage and ODC Theater. Her primary profession from 2014-2018 has been as a freelance painter, yet much of her painting work has featured dancers. She moved back to Maui in 2018 and is so excited to dive back into the Maui dance community that raised her and will always be her home.
